Blurb : I’m Not Twenty Four... I've Been Nineteen For Five Years is Saumya’s story. Like most girls her age, she is interested only in fashion, boys, and girl talk. Her smooth, fun-filled metro life is thrown out of gear when she is posted in a small Karnataka village, immediately after college. Saumya’s name creates confusion about her gender, and instead of getting posted in a comfortable office job, she is sent to a steel factory in the village.
Here, a completely different kind of life awaits Saumya. There are no occasions to have coffee with friends, no trips to the malls and no shopping in the small village that she has moved to. She finds herself between unknown people, new surroundings, and an unfamiliar language. To make things worse, she is working with people who are not used to having a woman in their workplace. What Saumya gets at the beginning of her life outside college is completely different from what she expected.
In this village, the readers are introduced to the other major characters of the novel. Some of them are Malappa, a smart rebel whose intelligence make his boss feel inferior, and Shubhro, a nomad for whom alcohol and marijuana are the only things that matter. Saumya falls in love with Shubhro, who is actually an IIM graduate, who prefers a nomadic life and cannot stay in one place for more than 90 days.
Will this girl from Delhi be able to survive this life? Will she be able to adapt to the difference between these two worlds? Will Shubhro, Malappa, and Saumya be able to face this tough world filled with riots, bloodshed, and violent bosses?
Review:
Finally came across a book with the female protagonist in the lead role. This book is a gift to me from a loved one. The first thing I noticed was the cover page of the book. Which girl would want her stilettos describe her was my first thought. As this book wasn't my pick I didn't even go through the blurb. The fact that the book is written by "Sachin Garg" gives me an assurance that its a good choice.
When ever we read a book we tend to imagine what's going to happen next. This book is nowhere close to my imagination. Saumya is a happy-go-lucky girl when she gets placed in a company she wanted. Just like every other girl Saumya did everything to look her best in her professional life. A series of events from gym to shopping became her routine. When she got the call letter her life took a turn upside down. Even in her worst nightmare she wouldn't have thought that she will land up in a village where all the efforts she put in to groom herself would be in vain.
She was surrounded by men who never worked with a woman. She was into reaction team which was a taxing job for her. She imagined handsome guys wooing for her and she got the job where she had to deliver bitter news to the family members of the accident victims. Malappa was the one she had an inclination to and fate brought his death. Shubro was the knight in the shining armour for her. He came when she needed some one on her side. But as destiny's game is never predicted they part ways. Shubro is a no-mad who doesn't stay at a place for more than 90 days. Saumya anticipated that her love would not let him go. But the reverse happened. He did leave on the 90th day but not before leaving a clue of his location.
No matter who you are.. Love changes you and makes you a better person. I would rate this book a 4/5. Do let me know what you felt when you read this book. Happy reading :)
